One fatality, several injured
Tragedy struck when a stolen vehicle crashed overnight in Waterbury, resulting in the death of a 14-year-old girl. The incident occurred at around 2:20 a.m. on Friday at the intersection of East Main, Baldwin, and Cherry streets.
According to the police, the collision involved two vehicles: a Hyundai Sonata and a Ford Escape. Investigations revealed that the driver of the Hyundai ran a red light and collided with the Ford. As a result of this impact, the teenage girl was ejected from the stolen vehicle.
Waterbury police released surveillance footage capturing this tragic event. Inside the stolen Hyundai were four juveniles - including both girls aged 14 and 15 years old along with two boys also aged 15 years old. Unfortunately, one of these boys sustained life-threatening injuries but is currently listed as stable.
"Some are in local hospitals here in Waterbury; some were transported out of town to Hartford," stated Chief Fernando Spagnolo from Waterbury Police during an afternoon news conference on Friday. "But they are listed in stable condition at this time."
The driver of the Ford Escape has been identified as a 38-year-old man who was taken to a local hospital for treatment but is considered stable with non-life threatening injuries. Another passenger inside that vehicle was an 18-year-old man who also received medical attention at a local hospital for critical injuries but has since been released.
Police have confirmed that they were familiar with all teenagers involved in this tragic accident including both victims -the deceased girl and her male friend who was driving.
Further investigation by Waterbury police determined that the Hyundai had been stolen earlier on Friday morning before the crash occurred.
Waterbury police have urged anyone with information regarding either the crash or theft to contact them at 203-346-3975.
