16-Year-Old Boy Killed in Single-Vehicle Accident in Freeport

A tragic accident in Freeport, Illinois claimed the life of a 16-year-old boy on Saturday night. The incident occurred around 10 p.m. when the Stephenson County Sheriff's Office and the Freeport Police Department responded to a report of a single-vehicle crash at the intersection of S. Walnut Rd. and W. Lamm Rd.
Upon arrival, emergency responders discovered that a black 1998 Chevrolet pick-up truck had crashed into a tree near the Stephenson County Highway Department building. Tragically, the driver, identified as a 16-year-old boy from rural Freeport, was found deceased at the scene.
According to authorities, an initial investigation revealed that the pick-up truck had been stolen from Jo Daviess County prior to the accident. The owner of the stolen vehicle coincidentally came across it near West Ave. and Meadows Dr., where they encountered the teenager driving it.
The owner informed him that law enforcement would be contacted about his actions; however, their interaction was brief as they did not know each other personally. Despite this warning, the teenager chose to drive away with the stolen truck.
Heading east on Meadows Dr., he then turned south onto Walnut Ave before losing control of the vehicle at Walnut and Lamm Rd., crashing head-on into a tree belonging to Stephenson County Highway Department property.
Tragically, during impact with this tree, he was ejected from his seat and sustained fatal injuries as a result. No other individuals or vehicles were involved in this devastating incident.
An autopsy has been scheduled for July 24th, 2023 in order to determine further details regarding cause of death and any potential contributing factors related to this heartbreaking accident.
