A tragic car accident in Riverside County, California has claimed the life of a 17-year-old girl. Giovanna “Gia” Rizzo was on her way home from her boyfriend’s graduation when the crash occurred at around 9 p.m. last Thursday.
According to the California Highway Patrol, a GMC Sierra driven by a 30-year-old man sideswiped a Nissan Titan carrying two teenage girls, including Rizzo. The impact caused major damage and resulted in the Sierra rolling over after the crash.
Rizzo died from her injuries at the scene while both drivers and another passenger were taken to hospital with severe injuries. The driver of the Sierra is believed to have run a red light at the intersection where the accident took place.
The community has rallied behind those affected by this tragedy through GoFundMe pages set up for both Rizzo and one of the survivors, Gavin Hooper. Hooper suffered cuts and bruises as well as a fractured hand while his sister remains hospitalized with severe brain injury.
“[Landis] is in a coma with pain management and in care of neurological surgeons who are testing her daily for neurological progress,” reads an update on their fundraising page.
Meanwhile, funds raised through Rizzo’s GoFundMe will go towards Kids Court and Counseling Center where she had helped on child abuse cases during her lifetime.
Friends have described Rizzo as someone who brought joy into their lives even on bad days.
This tragedy serves as yet another reminder that reckless driving can lead to devastating consequences which affect entire communities long after they occur.
