Two people were killed and another person critically injured.

Maine State Police have reported a fatal wrong-way crash on Interstate 295 in Falmouth, Maine. The accident occurred on Memorial Day and resulted in the death of two people while another person was critically injured. Emergency crews responded to the scene shortly after 10 a.m., causing traffic to come to a standstill for several hours. The incident took place at mile marker 10 on the northbound side of I-295.

State police requested that people avoid the area while first responders tended to the injured and conducted their investigation just south of Exit 11.

Initially, state police had no information about anyone's injuries but later confirmed that Nancy Ezhaya, aged 72 years old from Yarmouth, and Allen Apblett, aged 61 years old from Oklahoma died in the collision. Apblett's wife was also seriously injured in the crash; however, there is no update regarding her condition.

According to state police reports, preliminary investigations show that Ezhaya entered I-295 driving south in the northbound lane with her Toyota SUV crashing head-on into a Honda SUV headed north in its respective lane. It remains unclear why Ezhaya was driving towards incoming traffic as investigations continue.

The double-fatal collision closed down I-295 for approximately three hours during one of America's busiest holiday weekends with traffic diverted onto Route 1 in Falmouth at Exit nine before reopening around 1:15 p.m.

Pictures taken by witnesses showed lines of cars parked along both sides of highways due to heavy congestion caused by this tragic event.

The cause behind this unfortunate incident remains under investigation.
