Interstate reopened around 9:30 pm

A massive pileup involving more than 20 vehicles shut down a stretch of Interstate 795 near the Wilson and Wayne County line in Eastern North Carolina for several hours on Tuesday night. The accident occurred during rush hour traffic on I-795 near Alton Road south of Black Creek in Wilson County.

According to DriveNC, at least 21 vehicles were involved in the crash, including an empty propane truck that would normally be hauling fuel.

Fortunately, officials from Wayne County have confirmed that there were no serious injuries among those involved in the accident. They also stated that they are not aware of any fatalities resulting from this incident.

The cause of the pileup is still under investigation, but it is believed to have been triggered by poor visibility due to heavy fog and smoke from nearby wildfires. Emergency crews worked tirelessly throughout Tuesday evening to clear up debris and reopen all lanes of traffic as quickly as possible.

The interstate was finally reopened around 9:30 pm after being closed for several hours following one of North Carolina's worst accidents this year.
