A tragic motorcycle crash occurred early Tuesday morning in Oconee County, South Carolina, resulting in the death of a 20-year-old motorcyclist. The incident unfolded after the rider reportedly attempted to evade two separate traffic stops.

The crash took place at approximately 12:30 a.m. on East Main Street near South Hampton Street in Westminster, according to officials from the Oconee County Coroner's Office. The victim has been identified as Nevan Matthew Hopkins.

Authorities revealed that the South Carolina Highway Patrol initially tried to stop Hopkins for speeding along Sandifer Boulevard. However, when he accelerated away from the trooper's pursuit, they decided to terminate their attempt to pull him over.

Following this unsuccessful encounter with law enforcement, an Oconee County deputy made another effort to apprehend Hopkins after being informed by the Sheriff's Office about his actions. Unfortunately, while attempting to catch up with him, the deputy lost sight of the motorcyclist.

Concerned about public safety due to Hopkins' high rate of speed and reckless driving behavior, a 1st sergeant instructed the deputy not to continue pursuing him any further. Consequently, the deputy decelerated and proceeded into Westminster.

It was during this time that a passerby flagged down the deputy and alerted him about a motorcycle crash near Hampton Street. Responding swiftly upon receiving this information, law enforcement discovered both an overturned motorcycle and Hopkins lying injured on the sidewalk.

To ensure impartiality throughout their investigation process, authorities have handed over responsibility for examining this incident to Greenville County Sheriff’s Office personnel.

This unfortunate event serves as yet another reminder of how dangerous high-speed pursuits can be for all parties involved. As investigations continue into what led up to this fatal accident in Oconee County, it is crucial for motorists everywhere always prioritize safety above all else when operating vehicles on public roads.
