Maui Police Investigate Life-Threatening Crash In Paia
Maui police are investigating a crash that occurred early Monday morning in Paia, which left a 20-year-old man with life-threatening injuries. The accident happened at around 5 a.m. on Hana Highway near mile marker 6.
According to authorities, the driver was operating a stolen white 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt and was speeding when he rear-ended a Maui County pick-up truck. He then crossed into the other lane and collided head-on with a Toyota Corolla.
Both drivers were extricated from their vehicles and taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center for treatment. The driver of the Toyota Corolla is recovering in stable condition while the 20-year-old driver remains in critical condition.
The occupants of the county vehicle sustained minor injuries and were also transported to hospital for further treatment.
Investigators believe that speed was likely a factor in the crash as well as not wearing seatbelts. The investigation is ongoing, and anyone who witnessed or has information about this incident is asked to contact Maui police immediately.
