59-year-old Santaquin man dies in auto-pedestrian crash

A 59-year-old man from Santaquin died in an auto-pedestrian crash on Chimney Rock Pass Road on Friday evening, according to the Utah County Sheriff's Office. The incident occurred approximately three miles west of Redwood Road and seven miles north of Elberta at around 5:10 p.m.
As per the news release from the sheriff's office, witnesses reported that a man was driving recklessly at speeds up to 70 miles per hour. He swerved to avoid hitting a pickup truck that was pulled off the side of the road but ran over a man standing nearby. The victim died at the scene, and the driver fled.
The suspect called dispatch about 30 minutes later, at around 5:40 p.m., and informed them that he was on Soldier Pass Road, approximately eight miles north of where the victim was struck and killed. Deputies arrived at the suspect's location and took him into custody safely. The front driver's side of the Toyota Tacoma pickup had damage consistent with what witnesses at the scene reported.
The area where the incident occurred is popular with off-road drivers, and hundreds of people were in the vicinity. The impact threw the man nearly 40 feet, and he suffered severe head and torso injuries. The victim died before first responders arrived.
Investigators believe that impairment was a factor in the incident. The Utah County Sheriff's Office is investigating the case.
