6 dead, 20 injured
On November 14, a tragic five-vehicle crash occurred in Licking County, Ohio, resulting in the death of six individuals and injuring 20 others. The Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSP) has recently released its preliminary report on the incident.
The crash involved several vehicles, including a charter bus carrying the Tusky Valley High School marching band. Tragically, three students from the high school lost their lives in this devastating accident. The OSP's report identifies each vehicle involved as follows: Unit one was a semi-truck located at the back of the line; Unit two was an SUV transporting a teacher and two band volunteers; Unit three was the charter bus with the band members; Unit four was another SUV positioned ahead of the charter bus; and finally, Unit five was another semi-truck leading the group.
According to the OSP's findings, this chain reaction collision occurred when Units two through five were slowing down due to an earlier accident scene. Specifically, unit one - a semi-truck owned by Mid State Systems Inc. - collided with unit two which then struck unit three. Shockingly, after colliding with unit two, this same semi "overrode" it by running over it entirely before crashing into unit three (the charter bus). First responders arrived at the scene to find that this large truck had come to rest on top of unit two (the SUV).
The OSP report indicates that following too closely was determined to be a contributing factor for unit one (the rear semi) initiating this chain reaction incident. No other vehicle involved in this tragic crash received any designation regarding contributing factors.
This preliminary report sheds some light on what transpired during this horrific accident but further investigation is still ongoing to determine all relevant details surrounding this tragedy.
