74-Year-Old Celina Man Killed in Car Crash in Monroe

A 74-year-old man from Celina, Ohio tragically lost his life on Thursday in a car accident. The incident occurred when the vehicle he was traveling in veered off state Route 63 in Monroe, Warren County and became airborne over an on-ramp before crashing onto Interstate 75 North. According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol's Hamilton Post, Melvin Norton was a passenger in a 2016 Chevrolet Equinox LT driven by Mary Jo Hernandez, aged 44 and hailing from Cleveland, Tennessee.
Norton was immediately transported via ground ambulance to U.C. West Chester Medical Center for treatment of his life-threatening injuries sustained during the crash. Unfortunately, despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
The preliminary investigation conducted by authorities indicates that Hernandez's vehicle was heading west on Route 63 when it suddenly veered off the right side of the road and collided with a ditch. This impact caused the car to become airborne and subsequently land off-road within I-75's northbound lanes. The Chevrolet continued its trajectory across all northbound lanes until it ultimately struck a concrete median barrier.
After colliding with the barrier, the vehicle crossed over it and ended up within I-75 South's southbound lanes. Tragically, both Norton and Hernandez suffered severe injuries as a result of this devastating accident.
Hernandez herself sustained life-threatening injuries requiring immediate attention. She was airlifted via CareFlight to Miami Valley Hospital for further treatment; however, her current condition remains unknown as of Thursday night.
