Several cars derailed, no fatalities reported.
An Amtrak train in California partially derailed after colliding with a water truck on Wednesday morning. The incident occurred in the city of Moorpark, and authorities from Ventura County police and fire departments swiftly responded to the scene.
The train involved was identified as Train number 14, known as the Coast Star Light, which was traveling from Seattle to Los Angeles at the time of the collision. According to Amtrak's statement, "Some of the cars have derailed but are still upright," as reported by the Ventura County Sheriff's Department via Twitter.
The train consisted of eight cars, including a baggage car, dining car, two coaches, a lounge area, and three sleepers. Additionally, there were two locomotives present during the incident. The Ventura County Fire Department confirmed that three of the cars had derailed; however, they did not specify which ones.
Emergency evacuation procedures were promptly implemented for approximately 186 passengers and 13 crew members aboard the train. Out of those evacuated individuals, 16 patients required medical attention and were transported to local hospitals. Fortunately, most injuries sustained were minor according to reports from Ventura County Fire Department officials.
Fifteen of the 16 patients had minor injuries, with one patient needing more extensive care at trauma centers due to their condition being deemed severe enough warranting specialized treatment.
Furthermore, the driver of the water truck was also taken to a trauma center for further evaluation.
Dispatch audio recordings obtained from the Ventura County Fire Department revealed that one crew member on the train was injured during the collision. The audio also indicated "severe damage" to the train as a result of the impact.
Authorities are currently investigating the cause of this incident, and it is unclear why the water truck was blocking the tracks at that particular time. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
The safety and well-being of all passengers involved in this unfortunate event remain a top priority for Amtrak, local authorities, and emergency response teams. Efforts are being made to support those affected by providing assistance through organizations such as VC Human Services Agency, VC EMS, VCSO (Ventura County Sheriff's Office), and Red Cross. Additionally, Ventura County Fire Department fire and EMS crews have cleared the scene after completing their operations.
