One suspect in critical condition, two others with bumps and bruises
An armed carjacking in Northeast Philadelphia took a dramatic turn when the stolen vehicle crashed and burst into flames, with one suspect still inside. The incident occurred around 3 a.m. on Tuesday on Shipley Road.
According to the police, three males armed with guns approached the driver of a 2015 Dodge Charger and forcefully took off in the vehicle. Authorities promptly released a description of the stolen car along with its license plate number.
Within minutes, a vigilant sergeant on patrol spotted a vehicle matching the description traveling south on Castor Avenue. The sergeant began pursuing the Charger, but the suspect behind the wheel was driving at an alarmingly high speed, disregarding red lights and stop signs.
Tragically, as they fled from law enforcement, the carjacked vehicle collided with a Honda CRV that was heading west on Levick Street. The impact caused the CRV to flip onto its side; fortunately, though shaken up by their ordeal, no injuries were reported for its 44-year-old driver.
Continuing their reckless path through city streets, only one block later did disaster strike again when the Charger crashed into a utility pole. This collision resulted in immediate ignition as flames engulfed both vehicle and surroundings.
While two out of three suspects managed to flee from authorities after abandoning their burning getaway car near Sterling Street's 1300 block, police successfully apprehended them shortly thereafter. Meanwhile, brave officers discovered an unconscious third suspect trapped inside what remained of his ill-fated ride - thanks to quick thinking by one sergeant who pulled him out before it was too late.
Medical professionals rushed to provide critical care for this individual upon arrival at hospital facilities due to his severe condition: "The sergeant more than likely saved this individual's life or saved him from getting burned very badly," Chief Inspector Small acknowledged.
The two other suspects, who sustained minor injuries during their escape, were also taken to the hospital for evaluation. Police have identified one suspect as 23 years old and the remaining two as being in their early twenties.
Remarkably, the carjacking victim was able to positively identify all three suspects involved in the crime. Additionally, officers recovered a discarded firearm thrown by one of the fleeing individuals. After extinguishing the fire that consumed the stolen vehicle, law enforcement discovered two more guns inside along with live ammunition.
