A 19-year-old driver trying to swat a bug away ended up causing a crash in New Jersey on Sunday afternoon, according to police. The incident occurred on Route 57 near Nikitin Way when the young man from Washington Township was driving his Tesla eastbound and lost control of the vehicle due to a bug flying around his face. He then rear-ended a Honda being driven by another 19-year-old woman from Washington Township.
The impact caused the woman's car to crash into a guardrail, but it is unclear if she suffered any injuries. The male driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries and refused medical treatment at the scene. However, he was issued a summons for careless driving by Hackettstown police officers who responded to the report of the accident.
Following this "bug-induced" crash, Hackettstown Police Department has issued safety tips for drivers who may encounter similar situations while on the road. They advise drivers to keep their eyes on the road and hands on the wheel at all times and not attempt to swat insects away while driving as it could cause them to lose control of their vehicles.
