Gelvy Ortiz became an amputee and remains hospitalized with injuries resulting in the amputation of his left leg. Doctors were still working to save his right leg.

A California teenager's life has been turned upside down after a suspected drunk driver crashed into him while he was sitting at a bus stop in Santa Monica. Gelvy Ortiz, 18, suffered injuries that resulted in the amputation of his left leg and remains hospitalized as doctors work to save his right leg. The accident occurred on June 2 and the suspect, John Edward Alevizos, posted bail shortly after being arrested.

Gelvy is the youngest of four brothers who immigrated from Guatemala to the United States in search of a better life. They became orphaned when they lost their mother to breast cancer at a young age. Despite this tragedy, Gelvy thrived academically and was an avid soccer player at West Adams Preparatory High School. He had planned to enlist in the U.S Army after graduation but now those dreams have been put on hold.

The Ortiz family is struggling with mounting medical bills and expenses since all three brothers are unable to work as they care for Gelvy during his recovery period. A GoFundMe campaign has been created to help them through this difficult time.
