Car Accident Claims Life of Shannon Gatlin and Injures Others

Gatlin later died, others injured and taken to UAB Hospital for treatment

A tragic car accident took place on Thursday afternoon, resulting in the loss of a Union Grove man's life. The incident occurred shortly before 1 p.m. on Alabama 75, approximately one mile south of Susan Moore in Blount County.

According to troopers from ALEA's Highway Patrol Division, the collision involved two vehicles. Shannon Gatlin, a 57-year-old passenger in one of the cars, suffered fatal injuries when their vehicle collided head-on with a car driven by Scott Melvin, a 53-year-old resident of Helena.

Both Gatlin and Melvin were rushed to Ascension St. Vincent’s Blount Hospital for medical attention. Tragically, Gatlin succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

The driver of the vehicle carrying Gatlin was identified as Connie P. Barksdale, a 72-year-old Altoona resident. Another passenger named Johnny B. Barksdale from Ashville was also present during the accident and sustained injuries requiring treatment at UAB Hospital.

At present, ALEA is conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding this devastating accident.
