Five people are currently hospitalized following a car crash that occurred on Sunday afternoon, according to Sergeant Mike Lang from the Englewood Police Department.
The incident began when an Englewood police officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop for speeding and fictitious license plates of a tan Volvo on North Main Street towards Sweet Potato Ridge Road. However, the suspect vehicle failed to stop despite the officer's lights and sirens.
In an attempt to flee, the Volvo collided with a white Toyota while attempting to make a left turn onto Sweet Potato Ridge Road. The impact caused the Volvo to veer left onto a sidewalk where it struck two pedestrians who were walking southbound. Both pedestrians sustained serious injuries and have been transported to a nearby hospital.
Upon witnessing the collision, the pursuing police officer immediately exited their cruiser and joined bystanders in providing life-saving measures for the injured pedestrians.
The driver of the Toyota was also taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
After colliding with both vehicles, the Volvo continued through a yard before coming to rest against a house. Two individuals inside then fled from the scene. A K-9 unit later located them hiding in a shed four houses away from where they crashed.
All these events unfolded within just 60 seconds - starting from when officers initiated their traffic stop until authorities apprehended both suspects using the K-9 unit.
The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office has taken over the case and will conduct further investigations. Sergeant Lang could not provide an estimate for how long the roadways would be affected, but assured drivers that they can still access North Main Street northbound and use Sweet Potato Ridge Road to travel south.
