Suspect taken to hospital in critical condition, no other serious injuries reported
A man who fled after shoplifting at a Kroger on Columbia Road caused a traffic accident that shut down Washington Road at Columbia Road for several hours. The suspect was spotted by a deputy heading east on Columbia Road, and the deputy turned on his emergency lights to conduct a traffic stop. However, the suspect fled and led the deputy in pursuit with speeds reaching 60-80 mph. As he approached the curve just before Washington Road, his vehicle collided with a Nissan Sentra. The impact caused him to lose control of his car which then crashed into a concrete power pole splitting it in half.
The suspect was partially thrown through the windshield and sustained critical injuries while his vehicle caught fire. A deputy managed to rescue him from the burning car before being taken to Augusta University Medical Center for treatment.
Fortunately, there were no other serious injuries reported during this incident; however, power lines were knocked down as a result of the crash.
At least part of the intersection will be closed for several hours as Georgia State Patrol investigates what happened here today. By 5:25 p.m., one lane had been opened in each direction so that motorists could pass through safely.
Georgia Power and Columbia County crews also responded to assist at this scene alongside Georgia State Patrol officers who are leading investigations into this matter further.
