Seven injured, no fatalities
A chain-reaction crash involving at least 12 vehicles occurred on the Dan Ryan Expressway early Wednesday morning, leaving seven people injured, according to Illinois State Police. The incident took place in the inbound lanes near 18th Street and was reported to authorities at 1:24 a.m.
The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) stated that the collision originated from two separate crashes involving semi-trucks. One of the trucks collided with barrels near Canalport, resulting in a fuel spill that created slippery road conditions. This led to a series of accidents as drivers lost control while attempting to navigate through the wreckage.
Emergency workers faced difficulties navigating their way across the expressway due to its extremely slick surface caused by spilled fuel.
Among those injured were two women aged 18 and 44 who were transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious condition. Additionally, a 44-year-old man was taken to Stroger Hospital in fair-to-serious condition while another man aged 42 along with a woman aged 21 and a girl aged 16 were also transported there with similar injuries. Furthermore, a different male victim aged 44 received treatment at Insight Hospital for minor injuries. Approximately ten others involved declined medical transport.
The inbound lanes of the Dan Ryan Expressway were temporarily closed at Canalport but have since reopened. IDOT reported that nine tons of sand were required to clean up the fuel spill and restore safe driving conditions.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the initial crashes involving the semi-trucks, while urging drivers to exercise caution on slippery roads during inclement weather.
