Child suffered critical injuries but is expected to survive

WAYNESVILLE, Mo. - A child was critically injured after being hit by a tractor-trailer on Interstate 44 in Waynesville on Wednesday evening, according to the Missouri Highway Patrol. The incident occurred at the 157-mile marker in an eastbound lane around 6 p.m. The mile marker is located near Waynesville High School.

The child, who is five years old, was found unconscious by investigators. Emergency crews airlifted the child to the University of Missouri Hospital in Columbia. Doctors have stated that the injuries are critical but not life-threatening.

The Missouri Highway Patrol has reported that the parent of the child lives near the interstate and claims that the child wandered onto the interstate. The investigation is ongoing.
