Driver flown to hospital with serious injuries, deputy and K9 partner uninjured

Indiana State Police are currently investigating a crash that occurred in LaGrange County, leaving a driver from Michigan with serious injuries. The incident took place on Saturday afternoon and involved a LaGrange County Sheriff's deputy.

According to authorities, the collision happened around 12:30 p.m. when police responded to reports of an accident involving a GMC pickup truck and the Sheriff's deputy. Preliminary investigations suggest that the deputy was traveling eastbound on State Road 120, responding to another call with his emergency lights and sirens activated.

The pickup truck, driven by Jamie Espinal-Albor, 33, from Sturgis, Michigan, was heading northbound on County Road 100 East but failed to yield to the approaching deputy vehicle. As a result, the truck entered the path of the deputy who collided with it. The impact caused the pickup truck to overturn and land upside down.

Emergency responders were required to extricate Espinal-Albor from his vehicle due to extensive damage caused by the crash. He was then airlifted to a nearby hospital where he is being treated for serious injuries sustained during the incident.

The sheriff's deputy involved in this unfortunate event has been identified as Deputy Zachary Anderson, 34 years old from Middlebury, IN. Anderson was operating a fully marked LCSD 2021 Dodge Durango at the time of the collision along with his K9 partner who fortunately escaped unharmed.

Although Anderson did not sustain any visible injuries during this incident; however medics transported him to a local hospital for further evaluation as precautionary measure.

In accordance with Indiana law requirements following accidents like these both drivers provided blood samples for chemical testing purposes which will help determine if alcohol or drugs played any role in causing this crash. The results of these tests are currently pending.
