The West Virginia Turnpike was closed for hours on Friday evening in both directions after a deadly multi-vehicle crash that included a tractor-trailer, according to Metro County 911 dispatchers. The accident occurred at the 83.5-mile marker before the tollbooth on the southbound side in the Cabin Creek area.
One person has died and four others were taken to the hospital. It is unknown how many other vehicles were involved in the crash. West Virginia State Police troopers are handling the investigation.
Charles McMicken, who was driving north, narrowly avoided being part of the accident. "I was standing on the brake just to stop and get around the truck," he said. "Another couple seconds, that would have been me clipped." After getting out of his RV, McMicken saw three women in a white car ahead of him, with one of them stuck. "She was pinned in her seat," he said. "Her friends couldn’t get her out. So we got in there and grabbed her and pulled her out."
The crash was reported before 4:30 p.m. and caused the closure of all southbound lanes and one northbound lane. Just before 8:30 p.m., all southbound lanes and one northbound lane were back open, according to Metro 911. As of just after 7 p.m., Cabin Creek Road, Paint Creek Road, and state Route 61/MacCorkle Avenue SE were also back open. They had been closed earlier due to fuel leakage.
