Police Identify Driver Killed in Semi-Truck Crash on Merle Hay Road

The Des Moines Police Department has identified the driver who died after a semi-truck swerved into the wrong lane and crashed into his Nissan sedan on Merle Hay Road last Friday morning. According to Sgt. Paul Parizek of the Des Moines Police Department, first responders arrived at the 3800 block of Merle Hay Road around 8:23 a.m. after responding to reports of a crash with injuries.

They pronounced Chad Kevin Lentz, a 50-year-old resident from Ankeny, dead at the scene and transported the driver of the semi-truck, a 55-year-old Newton man, to hospital. “The man appeared to be suffering from a medical event," said Parizek, adding that he was taken to hospital in critical condition.

It is unclear whether this apparent medical event contributed to the circumstances of the fatal crash. However, investigators said evidence at the scene shows that the semi-truck driver veered from the northbound lane into the southbound lane by Douglas Avenue intersection where it struck Lentz's vehicle; Lentz was traveling southbound at that time.

After crashing into Lentz's Nissan sedan, the semi-truck continued off-road and crashed into a utility pole.

Images captured show that a yellow semi-truck diagonally cut across the southbound lane while an apparently damaged silver sedan lay off-side. The front part of truck appeared as if it had knocked down one utility pole.

Des Moines police department continues its investigation with assistance from DOT Motor Vehicle Enforcement team.
