In a tragic incident on Wednesday morning, the driver of a stolen vehicle was killed in a crash in Windsor. Fortunately, a 17-month-old child who was in the backseat of the stolen vehicle remained unharmed.
According to Windsor Police, the crash occurred at the intersection of Windsor Avenue and Island Street. The authorities confirmed that the vehicle had been stolen from St. Gabriel School on Bloomfield Avenue just before 9:10 a.m.
Shortly after stealing the vehicle, another crime took place when a bank robbery was reported at Windsor Federal Savings Bank on Broad Street. It was during this series of events that led to tragedy as the driver crashed into a tree at Windsor Avenue and Hillcrest Road.
As police gathered information about each incident, they quickly realized that all three were connected. The deceased driver of the stolen vehicle stopped at Windsor Federal Savings Bank on Broad Street, entered and robbed the bank, then fled the scene in the stolen vehicle. He was subsequently involved in a single-vehicle accident with a child still inside.
Tragically, at the crash site, it became apparent that there were fatal injuries sustained by the driver who was pronounced dead by officials.
At this time, no details regarding suspect identity have been released by authorities investigating this case.
Assisting with investigations is The North Central Municipal Accident Reconstruction Team (NCMART), who are working diligently to piece together the sequence of events leading up to this tragic incident.
As investigations continue, Windsor police have urged people to avoid the area where the crash occurred. The incident remains under investigation as authorities work tirelessly to gather all necessary information.
