two players killed, two injured
A man has pleaded guilty to driving under the influence, leading to a fatal car accident that killed two softball players at the University of South Carolina Union three years ago. Yuriy Karpik will spend at least 14 more years in prison for his actions that fateful night. Karpik was charged with two counts of DUI resulting in death, two counts of DUI resulting in great bodily injury, and one count of damaging personal property.
According to authorities, Karpick was driving under the influence in Spartanburg County when he crossed the center line and crashed into a car carrying four South Carolina Union softball players. The crash resulted in the deaths of Grace Revels and Mia Stokes, both promising young athletes aged 20 and 18 respectively. Two other passengers were injured including Mia's twin sister Mallory.
During sentencing proceedings, Holly Stokes addressed the judge asking for maximum punishment stating "My body aches for my child." Authorities said tire tracks put Kapik rounding a corner while crossing the center line at between 93 and 101 miles an hour on that fateful night.
Revels' mother Connie Revels also spoke during sentencing proceedings saying "I never got to speak to my child again that night...the condition of her body was so bad they would not allow me to see my child again."
Kaprik had already spent three years behind bars before pleading guilty this week. He will now spend at least another fourteen years behind bars along with five additional years on home detention followed by parole.
The families are trying their best to bring something good out of their daughters' tragic deaths through foundations set up in memory of Gracie Revels Foundation and Mia Stokes Foundation.
