Driver Gilberto Armenta Crashes Stolen Vehicle on I-29 in Sioux City

Vehicle totaled, driver taken to hospital and will face charges
Sioux City Police Department reported that a driver who crashed a stolen vehicle along Interstate 29 will face several charges. The accident happened on Tuesday night when Gilberto Armenta, aged 21, crashed a silver 2019 Infiniti QX8 near the on-ramp to the southbound lanes of I-29 at Riverside Blvd. According to police reports, Armenta was driving between 80 and 100 mph up the on-ramp when he lost control of the car and drove through a chainlink fence before going off an embankment. The vehicle rolled several times before catching fire.
Armenta managed to get out of the burning car by himself but attempted to flee from the scene. However, he was apprehended by a Sioux City police officer who witnessed the crash. One hour before this incident occurred, someone had reported that their Infiniti QX8 had been stolen in Hawarden, Iowa.
Police say that Armenta will face several charges including theft, reckless driving and speeding once released from hospital where he is being treated for injuries sustained during the crash. As of Wednesday morning, he remains hospitalized.
The SUV involved in this accident was traveling at high speed according to witnesses who saw it cut across all lanes of traffic at last minute while exiting at Riverside Boulevard. On reaching exit ramp without stopping it left roadway towards field hitting fence then went airborne rolling over multiple times before coming to rest upside down.
