Patient killed, paramedics seriously injured

A tragic accident occurred early Tuesday morning when a suspected drunk driver collided with an ambulance transporting a patient to UH Geauga Medical Center. The patient inside the ambulance lost their life in the crash, while both paramedics sustained serious injuries.

According to Sgt. Aaron Belcher of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the incident took place around 12:30 a.m. at the intersection of SR 528 and Chardon Windsor Road. The South Central Ambulance was heading southbound on SR 528, carrying William Maley Jr., aged 47 from Dorset.

Meanwhile, Jason Slepsky, aged 36 from Chardon, was driving eastbound on Chardon Windsor Road but failed to stop at a stop sign. As a result, his Jeep crashed into the ambulance with significant force.

The impact caused Slepsky's vehicle to catch fire instantly while sending the ambulance off-road where it rolled multiple times before coming to a halt.

Tragically, Maley succumbed to his injuries at the scene of the accident. Both paramedics also suffered severe injuries as a result of this devastating collision.

The 25-year-old paramedic in the back of the ambulance sustained multiple bone fractures and was airlifted to University Hospitals Main Campus.

The driver of the ambulance was transported separately for treatment at UH Geauga Medical Center.

Following medical attention for minor injuries received during the crash at UH Geauga Medical Center, Slepsky was taken into custody and subsequently transferred to Geauga County Jail.

On Tuesday morning in Chardon Municipal Court appearance later that day; he pleaded not guilty on charges including one count of aggravated vehicular homicide, two counts of aggravated vehicular assault along with DUI and running a stop sign. Slepsky is scheduled to return to court on October 6.

This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the dangers posed by drunk driving and the risks faced by emergency medical personnel while performing their life-saving duties. The Ohio State Highway Patrol continues its investigation into this devastating accident, seeking justice for those affected by this senseless tragedy.
