Fire under control by noon

An electrical fire broke out in a transformer serving the Tiffany & Co. store on New York's Fifth Avenue, causing two minor injuries and spewing thick gray smoke from under the iconic building. The fire did not spread to the store itself, but as a precautionary measure, about 100 people were evacuated from the building.

Deputy Fire Chief Joseph Carlsen stated that the fire was contained to an underground transformer vault that supplies power to the Tiffany building. The incident occurred shortly after 9:30 a.m., and firefighters had it under control by noon. Videos shared on social media depicted smoke billowing out from beneath the store while firefighters battled the blaze with hoses.

Consolidated Edison spokesperson Alfonso Quiroz mentioned that an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire. However, surrounding buildings did not experience any power loss during this incident.

The flagship Fifth Avenue store gained fame through its appearance in "Breakfast at Tiffany's," released in 1961. It is renowned as part of luxury retailer Tiffany & Co., which was established by jeweler Charles Lewis Tiffany in 1837 and acquired by LVMH in 2021.

Adjacent to Trump Tower, former President Donald Trump's business headquarters, this incident drew attention due to its proximity. A request for comment made to a representative of Tiffany remained unanswered at present.
