Elgin man charged in DUI crash that killed D'Shaun Tudela and Amelia Mazeikis

An Elgin man has been charged with reckless homicide, aggravated DUI resulting in death and attempting to disarm a peace officer after being involved in a suspected DUI crash that left two recently graduated high school sweethearts dead over the weekend. Deni Rubio, 32, was held on $2 million bond on Monday for his involvement in the incident.
According to prosecutors, Rubio was apparently speeding when he turned right at a red light at Barrington and Higgins roads in Hoffman Estates on Saturday morning. That's when he collided with the young couple's car. D'Shaun Tudela and Amelia Mazeikis both aged 18 died as a result of the accident.
Witnesses told police that they saw Rubio speed through another red light moments before the crash occurred. When officers arrived at the scene of the accident, they found Rubio shirtless which led to an altercation between him and one of them. Court documents state that during this confrontation, Rubio managed to get his hands on two magazines from one of the officers.
Rubio was eventually subdued by law enforcement officials who took him to hospital where it was determined that his blood alcohol level was .136. Prosecutors also revealed that suspected drugs were found in his pockets which tested positive for cocaine and fentanyl.
The couple were driving to work on Saturday morning when they were hit by Rubio who was under the influence of drugs and alcohol. Tudela’s mother said she got the devastating call while catching a flight home from Texas.
