An individual has died after an MBTA Commuter Rail train collided with a car on the tracks in Abington, Massachusetts, on Wednesday afternoon, according to MBTA Transit police.
The incident occurred near the intersection of Railroad Street and Birch Street, where the heavily damaged car was seen off the tracks. Transit police were notified of the accident around 4:50 p.m.
Transit police stated that their investigation suggests that the warning system at the crossing was working properly. The vehicle passed another car that was stopped, drove around the gate arm, and onto the tracks, where it was hit by the train. The driver was killed, and there were no other injuries reported.
This intersection has seen several crashes in recent years, including one less than a year ago when an Abington high school senior was hit by a train as she tried to cross the tracks on foot. Town leaders have been working to improve safety at this intersection, which has two gates that come down as a train approaches. They have been calling for four gates to prevent drivers from going around those arms as they come down.
The investigation is causing delays for the MBTA's Kingston Line. This is a developing story, and more updates will be provided as they become available.
