Traffic Comes to a Halt on I-40 for Six Hours Following Fatal Collision
On Sunday, traffic on Interstate 40 was brought to a standstill for six hours after a fatal collision involving three vehicles. According to the Torrance County Sheriff's Office, the accident occurred between mile markers 233 and 234 on I-40W.
The collision involved two semi-trucks and another vehicle that were stopped on the westbound side of the highway due to construction happening on the eastbound side in this area. One of the semi-trucks rear-ended the vehicle, pushing it under another semi-truck.
Tragically, one passenger in the vehicle died at the scene while its driver was airlifted to University of New Mexico Hospital with serious injuries. The identities of those involved have not yet been released.
A deputy from Torrance County stated that traffic in both directions has resumed. However, no further details about what caused this incident have been made available at this time.
