Fatal Crash on DuSable Lake Shore Drive in Chicago

One person dead, multiple injuries
Chicago - A tragic incident occurred early Sunday morning when a wrong-way driver collided with a Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) bus on DuSable Lake Shore Drive, resulting in one fatality and multiple injuries. The crash took place at approximately 5:58 a.m. near Kenwood in the 4500 block of South DuSable Lake Shore Drive.
According to the Chicago Police Department, a man driving a Dodge Journey with two passengers was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes when it struck the #6 bus, which was heading northbound with passengers onboard. The collision caused significant damage to both vehicles.
Emergency services swiftly responded to the scene, transporting those involved to nearby hospitals for treatment. The driver of the Dodge Journey was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition with undisclosed injuries. One female passenger from the car was also transported to Northwestern Hospital in critical condition.
Tragically, another woman who had been riding as a passenger in the Dodge Journey succumbed to her injuries after being taken to U of C Medical Center. The identities of those involved have not yet been released pending notification of their families.
The bus driver and twelve CTA passengers were also taken to an area hospital for evaluation but were reported as being in good condition despite sustaining unknown injuries during the accident. Additionally, seven other CTA passengers declined medical treatment at the scene.
In addition to causing severe bodily harm, this devastating collision resulted in a fire that engulfed the Dodge Journey following impact. Fire officials promptly arrived at the scene and extinguished it before further damage could occur.
Authorities are currently investigating why exactly this wrong-way incident occurred on DuSable Lake Shore Drive; however, no immediate explanation has been provided regarding what led up to this dangerous situation unfolding.
As part of ongoing investigations, the Major Accidents Unit is working diligently to gather evidence and determine the factors contributing to this tragic event. Meanwhile, northbound lanes of Lake Shore Drive were temporarily closed for investigation purposes but have since been reopened as of 1 p.m.
The Chicago Fire Media Twitter account provided updates on the incident, stating that an EMS Plan 1 was activated at the scene due to a bus versus car collision resulting in multiple injuries and one car fire. A total of 23 individuals were triaged, with three classified as red (critical condition), thirteen as green (non-life-threatening injuries), and seven refusing medical treatment.
This devastating accident serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to traffic laws and remaining vigilant while driving. The consequences of reckless actions can be severe and impact not only those directly involved but also their families and communities.
