One person killed, another critically injured

A tragic accident occurred on Monday night in Groton, Connecticut, resulting in the death of one person and critical injuries to another. The incident is believed to have been caused by a street takeover where a red light was run, leading to a collision with an SUV that was turning into a shopping center with a green arrow.

According to the police, multiple 911 calls were received at around 9:26 p.m., reporting a crash involving several vehicles at the intersection of Long Hill Road and Meridian Street Extension. Prior to this incident, witnesses had observed a group of motorcyclists and ATV drivers driving recklessly in another part of town. These individuals proceeded through the red light while a woman driving an Audi attempted to make a left turn on her green light.

Some members of the group were riding without their lights on when one dirt bike collided with the Audi. As a result, both the driver and passenger on the dirt bike sustained injuries. Tragically, Tiara Wheeler, aged 24 from Norwich who was thrown from the bike upon impact died at the scene. The driver of the dirt bike identified as Scott Whipple (25) from Mashantucket also suffered critical injuries after striking the Audi.

The driver of the Audi was taken to L&M Hospital for evaluation but has since been released.

In addition to these devastating events, some individuals within this group took off with the dirt bike involved in this crash without providing any assistance or aid to those injured. Earlier sightings by officers revealed that these riders were engaging in reckless behavior such as performing donuts and popping wheelies at intersections along Long Hill Road and Route 12. Despite attempts by law enforcement officers not pursuing them further during these incidents,

Groton Police Chief L.J Fusaro expressed his concerns about such dangerous actions stating:

"In addition to wanton disregard for human life, removing evidence from the scene has tampered with and impeded this investigation. Moreover, reckless behavior on the roadways poses a danger to those operators and innocent motorists. Unless this behavior stops, I fear more of these senseless tragedies will occur."

The police are now urging anyone who witnessed the incident or possesses any information regarding the crash, location of the dirt bike involved, or identities of individuals within this group to contact Groton Police Department at 860-441-6712.
