Fatal Crash Near Caruthers: James Mattos Identified as Victim

One fatality, two occupants with major to moderate injuries
The Fresno County coroner has identified the man who tragically lost his life in a crash near Caruthers on Tuesday morning. The victim has been identified as 69-year-old James Mattos of Fresno, according to the coroner's office.
The incident occurred at approximately 11:00 a.m. at the intersection of Dinuba and West Avenues. California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that a Nissan Altima carrying two adult males collided with a GMC Sierra pickup driven by an adult male.
As a result of the collision, both vehicles veered off the roadway and ended up in an orchard located on the southwest corner of the intersection. Tragically, CHP confirmed that the driver of the GMC Sierra was pronounced dead at the scene.
Meanwhile, emergency services rushed to aid those injured in the accident. The two occupants of the Nissan Altima were transported to a nearby hospital with major to moderate injuries for further medical treatment.
Law enforcement officials have stated that alcohol and/or drugs do not appear to be contributing factors in this tragic collision. However, investigations are still ongoing to determine what caused this fatal accident near Caruthers.
