Fatal Crash in New Ulm, MN: One Driver Dead

One driver dead, another in custody
Tragedy struck on Thursday afternoon when two vehicles collided head-on in southern Minnesota, resulting in the death of one driver. The State Patrol swiftly responded to the fatal crash that occurred shortly before 2 p.m. along Hwy. 68 near the intersection of 15th St. South in New Ulm.
According to the state crash report, a northbound car and a southbound SUV were involved in the collision. Sadly, Sharon Ann Portner, an 82-year-old resident of New Ulm who was driving the SUV, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the car has been identified as John Roy Deleo from Lake Crystal, MN. He is reported to be 53 years old. Following the accident, Deleo was transported to a hospital in New Ulm with injuries described as non-life-threatening.
However, after receiving medical treatment for his injuries at the hospital, Deleo was subsequently released and taken into custody by authorities. He has been booked into Brown County Jail on suspicion of criminal vehicular homicide and DWI (Driving While Intoxicated).
The state crash report revealed that alcohol was detected in Deleo's system at the time of this tragic incident.
As of Friday morning, no arraignment date had been set for Deleo's appearance before Brown County Court.
This devastating collision serves as another reminder about road safety and emphasizes how important it is for drivers to remain vigilant while behind-the-wheel.
