The Georgia Department of Public Safety reported a fatal accident that caused the closure of I-85 near the Georgia and South Carolina state lines. The incident occurred early in the morning, at around 4:05 a.m., when troopers were called to I-85 north near mile marker 178 after receiving reports of a Jeep headed southbound on the northbound side.
According to officials, "the Jeep hit a tractor-trailer head-on causing the Jeep to become engulfed in flames." The debris from this collision then hit a tanker truck also heading north. As a result, its driver was taken to AnMed Health Medical Center in Anderson with serious injuries.
After hitting both vehicles, the Jeep ran into a guardrail ejecting the driver, while the tractor-trailer went off the left shoulder into a ditch." Sadly, Devin James Eastman, aged 41 and from Naples Florida who was driving the jeep died on scene.
Due to this tragic event's severity and complexity, authorities had to close down all lanes going north for an extended period as they conducted their investigation and clean-up operations.
