Fatal Five-Vehicle Crash on I-465 in Indianapolis

One fatality, multiple injuries
A tragic five-vehicle crash on Thursday evening resulted in the death of an adult female on the northbound lanes of I-465. The incident occurred near W 79th Street and 82nd Street at mile marker 23.1.
Indiana State Police (ISP) confirmed that they received reports of a multi-vehicle crash and possible entrapment around 6:38 p.m., prompting them to dispatch troopers to the scene. Upon arrival, it was discovered that the collision involved five passenger cars.
Three adults were immediately transported to a nearby hospital for treatment, while sadly, one adult female was pronounced dead at the scene. Another female sustained serious injuries and is currently hospitalized. An adult male also received medical attention for minor injuries.
The severity of the accident led authorities to close all northbound lanes of I-465 for over four hours as investigations took place.
Preliminary information from ISP suggests that an SUV failed to stop in time when it encountered backed-up traffic near 86th Street on I-465 NB. This caused the SUV to collide with another passenger car occupied by the deceased woman and two other injured individuals. Subsequently, three more vehicles became involved in a chain reaction collision due to this initial impact.
Authorities do not suspect alcohol or drugs played a role in this fatal incident. As of Thursday night at 10:13 p.m., I-465 remained closed while investigations continued into determining what caused this devastating crash.
