One Dead and Four Injured in Multi-Vehicle Collision on Interstate 5

Oceanside, Calif. - A tragic multi-vehicle collision on Wednesday evening in the Oceanside area has left one person dead and four others injured. According to authorities, the incident occurred around 8:58 p.m. on northbound Interstate 5, just north of State Route 78.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that a red sedan was parked on the side of the road for unknown reasons when a high-speed black Chevrolet Corvette attempted to pass it by using the right shoulder. Unfortunately, the Corvette collided with the stationary sedan, causing it to be pushed into the slow lane where an 18-wheeler truck crashed into it.

Following the crash, which resulted in significant damage to all vehicles involved, including fatalities and injuries, the driver of the Corvette fled from his car and ran up a nearby hill. However, officers were able to locate him and place him under arrest.

Authorities have identified Edwin Vincent Hoffman as the driver of the Corvette. The 39-year-old man from Oceanside is now facing multiple charges related to this incident including felony driving under influence (DUI), felony hit-and-run, and gross vehicular manslaughter.

Tragically, one passenger inside the red sedan lost their life at scene while four other occupants sustained injuries ranging from moderate to major severity. They were immediately transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.

As a result of this devastating collision investigation process carried out by CHP officers temporarily closed down several lanes on northbound I-5 at State Route 78 as well as westbound SR-78 leading onto northbound I-5 connector ramp.

Based on preliminary evidence gathered at scene investigators believe that DUI played a role in causing this fatal accident. Authorities are continuing their investigation into this tragedy while ensuring justice is served for those affected by these events.
