Idaho State Police Investigating Fatal Collision in Rathdrum
The Idaho State Police are currently investigating a tragic two-vehicle collision that took place on Thursday, July 6th, at around 5:30 PM. The incident occurred at the intersection of State Highway 53 and North Mill Street in Rathdrum.
According to authorities, a 78-year-old male from Rathdrum was operating an electric scooter and traveling southeast across the intersection when the accident happened. At the same time, a blue 2021 GMC Sierra pickup driven by a 54-year-old male from Rathdrum was heading eastbound on SH53 and collided with the electric scooter within the intersection.
As a result of the impact, the elderly scooter operator was forcefully ejected from his vehicle onto the ground. Emergency services were immediately called to the scene and he was swiftly transported via ground ambulance to a nearby hospital for treatment. Tragically, despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment. Next of kin has been notified.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported for the driver of the GMC Sierra pickup involved in this devastating incident.
Due to this collision's severity and subsequent investigation requirements, State Highway 53 had to be temporarily blocked for approximately three hours following its occurrence.
The Idaho State Police have taken charge of investigating this heartbreaking accident fully. They will work diligently to determine all relevant factors contributing to this collision's cause.
