Fatal Water-Tanker Truck Crash in Smithfield Twp.

One fatality
One man tragically lost his life in a water-tanker truck accident that resulted in the closure of several miles of road in Bradford County on Thursday morning. The incident occurred around 5:39 a.m. when 35-year-old Nathan Spencer was driving north on Berwick Turnpike in Smithfield Township, according to Pennsylvania State Police.
As Spencer approached the intersection with Hoblet Rd., the truck veered off the north side of the road while navigating a sharp left curve. The weight of the water inside caused the truck to flip over, resulting in its slide into a ditch on the same side of the road. Consequently, severe damage was inflicted upon the cab during this sequence of events.
Tragically, it was reported that Spencer had not been wearing his seatbelt at the time of impact and he was pronounced dead at the scene by authorities.
In response to this devastating crash, local agencies swiftly arrived at Berwick Turnpike in Smithfield Township around 5:30 a.m. on July 6th, 2023 as announced by Bradford County Public Safety officials. To facilitate cleanup efforts following this incident, Berwick Turnpike had to be closed between Rolling Hills Rd. and Springfield Rd.
However, it is important to note that local traffic still retained access up until Hoblet Road despite these closures imposed for safety reasons.
