Fayetteville police officer hit by tractor trailer while directing traffic away from sinkhole

A police officer in Fayetteville, North Carolina was hit by a tractor trailer on Tuesday morning while he was directing traffic away from a sinkhole. The incident occurred at around 2:48 am when US-401 North near Graham Road in Cumberland County was deemed "impassable" due to the sinkhole. As a result, Raeford Road at 71st School Road were shut down until further notice.
The tow truck that hit the officer was already inside the sinkhole and trying to get out. The male officer was directing traffic when he got hit by the truck.
The injured officer has been taken to hospital for treatment of his injuries. Meanwhile, drivers are being asked to avoid the area and seek an alternate route until further notice.
Recent storms have caused significant damage across Fayetteville, causing several sinkholes throughout the city. Contract crews are currently working on repairs and hope to reopen roads affected by these incidents as soon as possible.
