Motorcyclist killed, driver of SUV cooperating with investigators

All inbound lanes of the I-69 Southwest Freeway before Shepherd Drive in Montrose, Houston were reopened six hours after a fiery wrong-way crash involving a possible drunk driver. The accident occurred just before 2 a.m. Friday and resulted in the death of a motorcyclist in his 40s.

According to Houston police, an SUV got onto the 527 Spur going the wrong way and collided head-on with the motorcycle. Both vehicles caught fire upon impact. There were two people inside the SUV at that time, but they did not sustain any serious injuries.

The driver of the SUV was subjected to field sobriety tests by officers who arrived on scene shortly after. "According to our investigation, it appears that the driver that went the wrong way has signs of intoxication," said Sgt. Dionne Griffiths.

The district attorney is currently processing evidence gathered from the scene and will likely charge him with intoxication manslaughter.

The incident caused major delays for drivers as all inbound lanes of Southwest Freeway remained closed for several hours until reopening at 8:03 am.
