Fire Truck Struck by Motorist on Interstate 70 in Washington County

A South Strabane Township fire truck was hit by a motorist while responding to an accident on Interstate 70 in Washington, Pennsylvania on Saturday. The firefighters were dispatched to the scene of a vehicle accident on Interstate 70 eastbound, which involved an overturned camper and a pickup truck facing the opposite way in traffic.
As the firefighters were establishing a perimeter to slow traffic and protect the first responders, a fire truck with additional firefighters was called to the scene. Once the truck was positioned, a passenger vehicle struck the truck, with crew members inside, according to a department press release.
Fortunately, there were no injuries to firefighters. However, the driver of the vehicle that caused the incident was transported to the hospital with injuries. The truck sustained damage to the driver's side, "affecting access to its compartments, safety components, and electrical system," the release added.
After the truck was damaged, a firefighter reported that they were nearly struck by oncoming traffic, with the driver "driving at an excessive rate of speed," per the release.
The incident highlights the dangers that first responders face while responding to accidents on busy highways. It is important for drivers to slow down and move over when they see emergency vehicles on the side of the road.
The South Strabane Township Fire Department is urging drivers to be cautious and alert while driving on the highways. The incident is currently under investigation.
