Five-Year-Old Girl Dies in Car Crash Involving Police Truck

On Sunday night, a tragic car crash in Auburndale resulted in the death of a five-year-old girl. The incident occurred at the intersection of U.S. Route 92 and Havendale Boulevard. Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd provided details about the accident.
According to Sheriff Judd, Auburndale police Sgt. Danny Swan was en route to assist a sheriff's deputy who had requested backup when the collision took place. He praised Sgt. Swan as an exceptional officer who was closest to their team and rushing to provide emergency aid.
Reports indicate that Sgt. Swan had his lights flashing and sirens blaring as he approached the intersection. However, Jer'Manika Anglin, a 25-year-old mother from Winter Haven, proceeded through the green light into the intersection with her five-year-old daughter Jalina seated in the back.
Sheriff Judd explained that Anglin claimed she heard the sirens but mistakenly believed they were clear to proceed after another vehicle moved forward at the same time: "So she pulled into the intersection and was struck by the Auburndale police sergeant."
While Anglin suffered wrist injuries, tragically her daughter did not survive despite prompt emergency services provided by multiple agencies including Auburndale Fire Department and EMS.
Sheriff Judd expressed deep sorrow for both Sgt. Swan and Jalina's family: "Even though he was perfectly within his rights to respond urgently using lights and sirens, it doesn't make it any easier for him or for this child's grieving family."
In light of this heartbreaking incident, Sheriff Judd urged members of the public to be vigilant when hearing sirens on roads: "Stop if you hear them; identify where they're coming from; then proceed with caution."
