A four-car crash occurred at the intersection of Highways 281 and 34 in southwest Grand Island on Wednesday morning, causing drivers to detour around the area. The accident happened just before 8:30 a.m. when a Nissan Murano was traveling northbound on Hwy 281 while a southbound Ford Escape was turning left onto Hwy 34. The two cars collided, splitting the Ford Escape in half. Two other vehicles that were waiting at a stoplight on westbound Hwy 34 were also hit.
The Nebraska State Patrol reported that only one person was injured during the incident - the driver of the Ford Escape who was taken to CHI Health St. Francis hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. There were no other reported injuries and police did not identify any of those involved in the accident.
However, according to witnesses, one of the vehicles ran a red light at high speed prior to impact; as of Wednesday afternoon there had been no arrests or citations made regarding this claim.
The patrol said that although partial closure lasted for about an hour after their arrival, they are still investigating what caused this collision between these four cars at such an important intersection for local traffic flow.
