Four people injured, two discharged, two remain in hospital
Four people were injured in a collision between a horse and buggy and a 2020 Ford Explorer on July 11, according to Pennsylvania State Police. The incident took place at approximately 9:53 p.m. on Old Philadelphia Pike, just east of Martin Rd, Salisbury Township.
Authorities reported that the crash occurred when the driver of the SUV became distracted while looking down at his phone's GPS. Upon shifting his attention back to the road, he found himself directly in front of the horse-drawn buggy. Despite attempting to brake, the driver was unable to slow down quickly enough and rear-ended the buggy.
The impact caused the buggy to overturn, ejecting all four occupants onto the road. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) arrived at the scene and transported them to Lancaster General Hospital for treatment of their injuries. As of July 12, two individuals have been discharged with minor scrapes and lacerations; however, two others remain hospitalized for further medical attention due to possible broken bones and head injuries.
Unfortunately, before first responders could arrive at the scene, it was discovered that the horse involved in this accident had fled from its location.
This incident serves as a reminder for drivers to prioritize their focus on operating their vehicles safely without distractions such as mobile devices or other external factors that may divert their attention from driving responsibly.
