The Cass County Sheriff's Office has released information regarding a tragic two-vehicle crash that occurred on Tuesday night, resulting in the deaths of four individuals. The incident took place at the intersection of 238th Street (Highway 63) and Church Road, located south of Ashland.
According to deputies who arrived at the scene around 8:07 p.m., a red Honda Accord driven by Hugo Buendia, a 34-year-old resident of Lincoln, was traveling westbound on Church Road when it failed to stop at the stop sign. At that moment, a red Ford F-250 heading south on 238th Street collided with Buendia's vehicle. The driver of the Ford F-250 has been identified as Justin Wiederin, a 22-year-old from Omaha.
Tragically, three passengers in Buendia's Honda suffered fatal injuries. Ricardo Jimenez, aged 28, was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. Both Buendia and Alejandro Valverde, a back-seat passenger aged 39, were also pronounced deceased. Isaac Valverde, aged 40 and another passenger in the car had initially shown signs of life but unfortunately passed away before he could be transported to hospital.
Following standard procedure for such incidents involving fatalities, Wiederin underwent preliminary testing for alcohol consumption conducted by Nebraska State Patrol (NSP). The results showed no presence of alcohol (.000 BAC). However, Wiederin was still taken to a hospital where his blood will be drawn for further analysis as ordered by county attorney authorities. An autopsy has also been scheduled for Buendia.
Authorities have indicated that none of those killed in this devastating crash were wearing seat belts at the time of impact. While investigations are ongoing, the initial belief is that alcohol may have played a role in this tragedy.
The Nebraska State Patrol is currently responsible for reconstructing the accident scene as part of their investigation. Further details surrounding the incident are yet to be released as authorities continue their efforts to determine the exact circumstances that led to this fatal collision.
