# Freeway Crash Near U.S.-Mexico Border Leaves One Dead
A tragic freeway crash near the U.S.-Mexico border has resulted in the death of at least one person, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP). The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon on southbound Interstate 805 near Camino De La Plaza, which is the last exit before reaching Mexico.
According to reports from CHP's Traffic Incident Information Page, a witness observed a white sedan attempting to make a U-turn on the freeway towards the port of entry. However, it collided head-on with a Honda minivan. CHP confirmed that the driver of the white vehicle, identified as an Audi, was driving in the wrong direction at the time of impact.
"Our understanding at this point is they turned around at the point of entry and came the wrong way," explained CHP Sgt. Hope Maxson.
It appears that due to missing their intended exit into Mexico, the driver mistakenly began traveling against traffic on I-805. As a result of this devastating crash, one man driving in the minivan lost his life. The Audi's driver, a 29-year-old man, sustained major injuries but is expected to survive after being transported to a nearby hospital.
In response to this incident, Caltrans issued a Sig Alert for closure of two right lanes on southbound I-805 north of Camino De La Plaza. This closure is anticipated to remain in effect for several hours while authorities investigate further.
To ensure public safety and manage traffic flow during this period, drivers heading towards Mexico are being directed by CHP officials to exit at Camino De La Plaza. Motorists can stay informed about current traffic conditions and closures through local traffic maps.
The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office has been called upon to examine and identify those involved in this tragic accident. Emergency crews from various departments including San Diego Fire-Rescue Department along with Chula Vista and National City are also present at the scene.
As investigations continue, the identities of both individuals involved in the crash have not yet been released to the public. Sgt. Maxson emphasized that drivers should be aware of an alternative option to re-enter the U.S., stating, "If you have missed the last U.S. exit here on the freeway, you can continue off to the left all the way down and there is a sign there that says U-turn back into U.S.A."
CHP also wants to remind drivers about measures they can take to protect themselves from wrong-way drivers. Sgt. Maxson advises staying in middle lanes as wrong-way drivers tend to stick to fast or slow lanes and shoulders. Additionally, maintaining a safe speed and keeping a high visual horizon by looking far ahead on freeways are recommended precautions.
The investigation into this tragic incident is ongoing as authorities work diligently to determine all relevant details surrounding this devastating crash near the U.S.-Mexico border.
