Pilot pronounced dead, power lines fell onto the highway causing minor crashes
A tragic helicopter crash occurred near an interstate in Ohio over the weekend, resulting in the death of the pilot and a series of subsequent crashes. The incident took place in Springfield Township, Clark County, when a Bell 206L-4 aircraft struck power lines and crashed into a nearby cornfield on Saturday afternoon.
The pilot has been identified as 36-year-old Isaac Lee Santos from Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. State troopers pronounced him dead at the scene. The helicopter was owned by Helicopter Applicators Inc., based in Gettysburg. This company specializes in aerial applications such as herbicide and insecticide treatments for farmland and other industries.
As a result of the crash, power lines fell onto both westbound and eastbound lanes of I-70. This led to minor collisions involving seven vehicles; fortunately, no additional injuries were reported apart from the pilot's fatality. To ensure safety during investigations and repairs, authorities closed down the highway for approximately five hours while crews from Ohio Edison worked diligently to restore power to affected areas.
Both the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have initiated investigations into this unfortunate incident. Additionally, local law enforcement agencies are conducting their own inquiry under the supervision of Ohio State Highway Patrol.
