A high-speed crash near Farmland, Indiana has left one person dead and three others injured. The incident occurred on Sunday evening at the intersection of County Road 100 North and State Road 32.
According to Randolph County Sheriff Art Moystner, a 2010 Honda Civic driven by Wesley Burkhart of Muncie disregarded a stop sign at the intersection before hitting a hump in the road at high speed. The car went airborne upon impact and landed back on the pavement before losing control and going into a ditch north of 100 N.
The Civic then rolled into another embankment on S. Plum Street causing it to go airborne for a second time and flip end over end until finally coming to rest in a pasture several feet east of a creek on the north side of 100 N.
During this tumbling process, two backseat passengers were ejected from the vehicle while an 18-year-old passenger from Avon was transported by air ambulance to an Indianapolis hospital. Both backseat passengers were taken by ambulance to a hospital in Muncie.
Burkhart was pronounced dead at the scene while none of those inside the vehicle were wearing seatbelts according to Sheriff Moystner.
The crash remains under investigation as authorities work towards determining what led up to this tragic event that claimed one life and caused injury for three others involved.
