Highway 12 on Pea Island has reopened after a serious traffic crash caused all lanes of the highway near the Pea Island Visitor Center to be closed to traffic yesterday. The North Carolina Department of Transportation tweeted about the crash at 11:38 a.m., which resulted in a significant traffic backup.

The Dare County Sheriff’s Office reported that crews were on scene clearing the roadway and expected it to reopen soon. At 1:44 p.m., they announced that Highway 12 had reopened, but advised drivers to exercise caution as traffic begins to clear up.

Highway 12 has one lane of travel in each direction, making it particularly important for drivers to remain alert and cautious while traveling through this area.
